Outdoor School Team Leader
Position Summary: The Team Leaders position is both highly demanding and highly rewarding. Leaders spend most of their time in direct contact with students, helping to coordinate a wide variety of resource management, conservation, and classroom projects. Six Team Leaders are assigned to Outdoor School youth crews and are responsible for the crew's growth and development throughout the year. Leaders spend their time inside and outside of the traditional classroom setting.
Duties and Responsibilities - Essential Functions:
- Aid student learning through one-on-one and small group activities
- Act as a role model and disciplinarian for youth, manage conflict resolution
- Lead youth in field education and work projects
- Prepare required daily and monthly paperwork and manage student data
- Camp with youth crews on up to four, 8 day spike (overnight) projects in a wilderness setting
- Coordinate and participate in the site's four (4) National Days of Service
- Assist teachers in classroom through small group learning activities
Duties and Responsibilities - Secondary Functions:
- Transport student teams in 12 passenger buses.
- Participate in student conferences, contact parents, create and implement lesson plans
- Partner with other organizations, such as Salmon Watch and the School Garden Project, to better serve our students and local community
- Coordinate and manage student council, student appreciation, and other school projects
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience teaching and/or leading youth, conservation, reforestation and/or recreation skills
- Desire for personal challenge and to help youth develop leadership and job skills
- Strong communication skills and a vested interest in community service
- Ability to participate in intense physical labor
Minimum Qualifications:
- Willingness to undergo a criminal and sex offender background check
- Bachelors Degree Required (Outdoor Leadership and/or Youth Development experience preferred)
- Valid driver's license and a history of responsible driving. Must be 21 years of age to qualify as a Northwest Youth Corps Driver.
- Must provide current photo ID and proof that s/he is a US Citizen, US National, or Legal Permanent Resident and is at least 17 years of age at the time of sign-up
- Able and willing to complete a total of 1700 service hours in 10 months
Schedule Requirements:
- Full time (40-45 hours a week) with a minimum of 1700 hours and 10 month term hours from late August to mid June. Exact dates are subject to slight change.
- Service hours are generally Monday-Friday 8-4:30pm with occasional night and weekend hours
Program Benefits:
- Up to a total of $11,800 living allowance dispersed evenly on a monthly basis
- Health insurance plan; Training; Child care, Loan forbearance, 15 days of break
- $5,350 Education Award (upon completion of the 1700 hours of service)
- The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing housing, food, work clothes, and a pair of 8 inch tall leather work boots.
