YouthGrow Team Leader Position Description
Position Summary: A team of seven YouthGrow (YG) Team Leaders serve as AmeriCorps members for a non-residential day conservation corps through the Northwest Youth Corps (NYC). The Team Leaders serve in pairs with ten youth ages 9-13. Leaders bring the YouthGrow program to life by ensuring each youth crew has a fun, safe, and productive experience at NYC.
YG Team Leaders supervise and motivate their crews working in the Laurel Valley Educational Farm (LVEF), at various community garden sites and on educational field trips. Projects and activities will include organic gardening and conservation work. Some hiking will be part of the field education outings. YG Team Leaders also teach lessons in natural resource science, leadership and personal development while working shoulder to shoulder with youth. We look for Team Leaders who like the challenge of hard work in the outdoors, who want to help youth grow, learn and develop important responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Education, recruitment, safety and development of youth participants
- Serve in the Northwest Youth Corps garden
- Working with youth at School Garden project sites during the school year
- Coordinate all daily operations for a crew of 10 or 11 youth during summer
- Lead youth safely and efficiently while working
- Educate youth about the natural environment during field trips and projects
- Complete required daily and weekly paperwork
- Attend all required trainings (EPI, safety, work skills, tools and natural resource education)
- Ability to keep youth engaged in physically strenuous service projects
- Poses the maturity to act as a positive role model for youth
Desired Qualifications
- 1 year of college complete, Required HS Graduate or GED
- Valid driver's license and a history of responsible driving. Must be 21 years of age
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- CPR and Basic 1st Aid Certification
- Experience teaching and/or leading youth
- Safely work/lead youth in outdoor physical labor/extreme weather conditions
- Ability to deal with the unexpected (i.e. poison oak, bees, youth behavior)
- Desire to help youth develop leadership and job skills
- Experience in outdoors, recreation , farming, environmental education, or youth leadership
- Strong communication skills and a vested interest in community service
Schedule Requirements: April 1– August 31, 2010 planning and implementing the summer program activities. Leaders average 45 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am to 5:00 pm. The member will serve a minimum of 900 hours. OR June 15– November 15 members will serve as crew leaders for the summer program and continue to work in the gardens until mid November. This is also a 900 position.
Program Benefits: Team Leaders earn $6,050 living allowance, and a $2,362 AmeriCorps education award upon completion of the service term. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing housing, food, work clothes and 8” tall leather work boots.
