Program Background

Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to youth development though teamwork, education, and challenge.  In 2005 NYC served 1,111 youth and young adults teens in three different programs.  NYC's 23-year history of success has been made possible by a broad-base of support from individuals, government agencies, businesses, and community organizations.  Revenue generated from projects completed by program participants support a significant part of each program's operating budget.  Grants and donations fund the rest of the NYC budget.  In 2005 these funds totaled $625,387 in project grants, $445,418 in state funding, $155,151 in county funding, $61,271 in foundation grants, $27,654 in corporate donations and $23,136 in individual support. 

 

Job Description

The Director of Development (DD) works closely with NYC’s Executive Director, members of the Board and program staff to raise the funds needed to fund facility renovation.  The DD works closely with NYC’s development team: an experienced grant writer, a graphic artist, an alumni coordinator and a public relations intern.  The DD is responsible for major gifts, planned gifts, special events, annual campaigns and leadership of an future capital campaign. In 2003 NYC purchased an entire elementary school and has started planning for a major renovation of the facility.  Raising the estimated three million dollars needed for this project is the primary focus of this position.   

 

Areas of Responsibility

Donor Development—Responsible for  the development/expansion of the NYC donor base, coordination of direct mail campaigns, implementation of annual fundraising campaigns, and development of a capital campaign.

Records and ReportsDevelops and maintains systems necessary to support tracking of data necessary to produce accurate and detailed reports on fundraising activities.  Responsible for producing reports required by funders and coordinating organizational compliance with donor requirements.

Public RelationsProvides information and makes presentations to civic groups and other organizations about NYC.  Develops press releases, reports, and displays required to support development activities. 

 

Education/Experience

Education – Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from four-year college or university; and three or more years related experience and/or training in development, including annual fund, major gifts, planned gifts, event planning and donor acknowledgment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience -- Must be able to demonstrate fundraising and grant writing experience on a scale commensurate with the organizational history detailed above.  Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and a self-motivated, independent worker.  Additional requirements include:

  • Demonstrated track record in raising major gifts from private sources.
  • Experience in capital campaign planning and implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding from foundation and corporate sources.
  • Familiarity with program evaluation concepts and strategies.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to synthesize complex program information into readable, concise and engaging prose.
  • Ability to professionally represent the organization to funders and community partners.
  • Strong computer skills in Word, Access and Excel.

 

Term of Employment

Full-time.  Workloads may require evening or weekend responsibilities.

 

Compensation

50/70K DOE.  Benefits: health/dental insurance with co-pay, short/long-term disability, life insurance, retirement plan funded by employer contributions and a 403-b option funded by employee contributions.

Director of Development

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

 

General

·         Work with NYC’s Executive Director members of the Board to fund renovations of NYC facility objectives.

·         Works with staff, Board and volunteers to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors and prospects for NYC.

·         Directs the planning and implementation of the agency's first capital campaign.

·         Creates a comprehensive long-range development plan and works with senior management staff to integrate development activities into NYC programs.

  • In collaboration with staff and development volunteers, directs the creation and implementation of the NYC’s annual fund raising plan. Analyzes results and evaluates effectiveness of fund raising programs.
  • Coordinates planned giving.
  • Provides appropriate fund raising training to Board members, other volunteers, staff, and program participants.
  • Works with program and finance staff to ensure compliance with all private grant requirements, including implementation, reporting program progress and tracking grant expenditures.
  • Provides training to program management and other staff to enhance and expand the agency's capacity to successfully pursue and manage private funding awards.
  • Ensures that the agency is adequately represented at partnership meetings or information forums related to funding that does or could support NYC programs.
