Parent's Update EAST TWO  weeks 4-5 (August 6-22)

This session has really been going strong, with great work all around the state! We are gliding into out last Parent's Weekend site, and ALL CREWS will be going on two-week hitches from here.

Here's what they were up to last week:

Orange Crew finished up their second week in a row in the Sawtooth National Forest, working with the Ketchum Ranger District. They built a few reroutes, including a LOOOOONG one. They also fixed some of the damage from early season rains and careless bikers on the Greenhorn and Mahoney Trail system just south of Ketchum.

Yellow spent their week in the River of No Return Wilderness, working in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. They began a heavy reconstruction project that NYC will be working on until next year on the Corn Creek to Lantz Bar section on the Wild and Scenic Salmon River. They did a lot of rockwork and brushing in this gorgeous area!

Blue Crew spent their week in the Sawtooth Mountains, taking care of a few different trails, buttoning them up and taking care of business, NYC-style on these trails. They also built a reroute and installed drainage.

Red Crew found themselves in the magnificent Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in the Nez Perce National Forest. They did a lot of brushing and general trail maintenance on the Lost Horse trail on the Montana side.

PARENT WEEKEND SITE (August 8th)

LOCATION: This will take place outside of Stanley, Idaho. To get there from Stanley, take route 21 out of town heading west about 3 miles to the turnoff for STANLEY LAKE. Make a LEFT toward the lake. After a couple miles, look for the NYC signs on your left to guide you into the site.

TIME: Plan to Arrive around 4pm, MOUNTAIN TIME (just a little reminder for you folks coming from Oregon or Washington).

Please stay with us for dinner and Saturday Circle. It may be helpful for you to bring lawn chairs and silverware.

Important Information about Parent Weekend Sites: click here and please scroll down

What to Do: Parents’ visits are an excellent opportunity for parents to get to know their son’s or daughter’s crew and the leadership team. Please take some time to visit with the participants, but refrain from removing your son or daughter from the weekend site location.

What to Bring: In anticipation of visiting parents we send out extra food for our Saturday dinner, however, if you would like to bring a dish to pass, please bring items that provide the nourishment that the corpsmembers need to work hard and stay healthy while out in the woods. Fresh vegetables and fruits are always welcome. Lastly, please bring your own plate and silverware.

Guidelines: During parents’ visits we ask that parents adhere to the NYC guidelines for creating a community that is safe, peaceful, law abiding and consistent with our efforts to provide a meaningful outdoor experience. Please help us by not smoking, cursing, camping illegally on-site, playing music from your car stereo or lending cell phones to the corps members. Instead spend your time talking, playing and laughing as we do during our 5 week wilderness experience.

Hope to see you there!

NEXT WEEK (August 10th to the 14th)

NOTE: Parents/Friends, if you have a Corps member who is out on this session, I ask that you not tell them what they are doing next week because we have a very important/fun tradition out here where we introduce the projects to them as a whole before we send them to their next projects. Thank you for understanding.

ALL CREWS WILL BE ON TWO-WEEK HITCHES to END THE SESSION.

Orange Crew will be working in the Salmon-Challis National Forest on a heavy trail reconstruction project along the Wild and Scenic Salmon River, which also happens to be the River of No Return Wilderness!

Red Crew will be working on a trail relocation project in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. They will be installing the trail to a Historic area for 2 weeks in the backcountry!

Blue Crew will be spending their last two weeks in the backcountry of the River of No Return Wilderness in the Payette National Forest, stabilizing a trail and relocating parts of that trail.

Yellow Crew will be spending their last two weeks in the Frontcountry and the Backcountry in the Sawtooth National Forest, completing previously started reroutes and repairing a seriously damaged trail.

Graduation Information

EAST TWO GRADUATION will take place at the Mann Creek Reservoir, 20 minutes North of Weiser, Idaho  the same place that Orientation was held. Take 95 north of Weiser. Drive past the Mann Creek Store (on your right) and start looking for the NYC signs on your left to guide you into the site.

GRADUATION is at 10 am on SATURDAY, August 22nd, and will conclude around 11.

IMPORTANT: At that time, if your youth is taking a Bus or Train from Boise, we will be sending a shuttle at 11 to take them to where they need to go. Expect them to arrive at the Bus or Airport between 12:30-1pm.

Please do not camp on site, as it is a very tight space for 5 crews and there are sites located below to accommodate you. If you happen to be driving an RV, please park it at the lower parking lot, which you will see on your drive in, as again, there is limited space at our site.

It should be an exciting time!! I hope to see you there, supporting your youth in the amazing thing they just accomplished.
