Outdoor Oregon Staff

Tom Helmer - Tom Helmer has been with the Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) on and off since 2002 and is currently the Program Director of OutDoor Oregon. Previously, he spent time as Crewleader, Woodsboss, and a Program Coordinator in the Youth Corps Department. In addition to working for NYC, Tom has spent time with the Youth Corps of Southern Arizona (now a part of the Southwest Conservation Corps), the Pinnacles National Monument Trail Crew in California, and as a Timber Framer in Vermont. His early trail crew days were spent in the backcountry of the black fly infested Adirondack Mountains building long winding staircases up the world’s steepest trails from sun up to sundown. Tom has also worked as a teacher, ski instructor, waiter, curator, cook, and dishwasher. Most recently Tom was the Senior Field Operations Coordinator for the Coconino Rural Environment Corps in Flagstaff Arizona where he supervised anywhere from 5 to 15 trail and saw crews (depending on the season). Tom has B.S. in Natural Resources from Paul Smiths College in Upstate New Your. He grew up on his grandfather’s beet farm near Rochester, New York where he became accustomed to long days and red hands. When not working he enjoys free healing, good music, running a chainsaw, moving rocks, hiking, riding his bike, and Parkour.

Abby Wellumson - Abby is proud to be a native of northwestern North Dakota; however, after learning everything there was to know about potato farming and the Lewis and Clark expedition, she decided to expand her horizons by moving to the great city of Minneapolis where she earned a degree in Accounting while taking in as many Twins games as possible.  Other than baseball, her interests include but are not limited to a vast array of literature and music, forestry, canoeing, fur trade era reenactments, curling, dark coffee, woodland creatures, and feeding an insatiable appetite for opportunities to learn and experience new things.
