Northwest Youth Corps crewleader and two crewmembers work on a trail structure called a puncheon. Structures are often made, entirely or in part, from natural raw materials found at the work site.


Crewmembers work together to pull Scotch broom weeds. In the Pacific Northwest, Scotch broom is a non-native invasive plant that can quickly overtake native plants. Many species of wildlife are dependent on native plants for survival.


Northwest Youth Corps youth crew works on a section of hiking trail. Each year, crews build and maintain miles of trails throughout the Pacific Northwest.


Northwest Youth Corps youth crews complete a wide range of conservation and land management projects. Often, these projects are labor-intensive and are located in remote locations that can only be reached on foot.


Crewmembers remove bark from a log to prepare it for a construction project. Northwest Youth Corps youth crews often use natural materials found at the project site, such as logs, to build or repair trail structures.


Northwest Youth Corps crewmembers use a crosscut saw to clear a fallen tree blocking a section of hiking trail. Clearing trail obstructions, such as fallen trees, is important to keeping hiking trails open and parks accessible.


Northwest Youth Corps youth crew uses teamwork to muscle a log into place to repair a section of trail. Crews often use natural materials found at the project site, such as logs, to build or repair trails.


Northwest Youth Corps youth crew builds a low bridge, called a puncheon, on a section of park trail. This type of structure provides for trail use, while protecting streams and wetland areas.
