NYC Projects
Residential programs offer teens, ages 14-19, a job training, employment, and education program modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's. The programs integrate challenge, education, and hard work into curricula that stress responsibility, pride, teamwork, and stewardship of natural resources. Youth work for four to five weeks, in 10 member crews along with two program staff, on conservation, reforestation, and recreation projects, and camp near their work sites. In addition to sharing the daily chores of camp life, crew members also explore contemporary environmental and social issues during educational programming.
NYC crews are trained and equiped to tackle a variety of trail projects. During the planning phase, our staff work closely with project sponsors to tailor the project to the needs of their trail users. From ORV trails to wheel chair accessible paths, our crews have the expertise to design and install any necessary trail structures including retaining walls, turnpikes, culverts, water bars and other drainage structures using native or prefabricated materials.
Bridge construction projects provide youth with the chance to learn basic carpentry and construction skills under the skilled guidance of our experienced staff. Safety remains our number one concern from basic rock fords to more advanced puncheon, foot log or stringer log bridge projects. Our staff are available to provide design consultation and our crews provide tools and muscle for even the most remote backcountry bridge projects.
 Habitat Restoration
Restoring a damaged ecosystem may involve a variety of tasks. Our crews have fought the invasion of non-native weeds on many fronts and have experiene in removing Scotch Broom, English Ivy, Canary reed grass, Himalayan blackberry, knapweed, and Russian olive to name a few. We have also worked on projects to rehabilitate riparian areas damaged by grazing. Planting native species and building protective enclosures helps jumpstart the return of native flora.
 Rangeland Management
Rangeland managers with the USFS and BLM have employed NYC crews to execute many different types of fencing projects. During the past two years we've worked with the Umatilla National Forest in Oregon to locate and remove decrepid barbed wire fence from prime elk habitat. We also constructed buck and pole fence to exclude elk and deer from regenerating stands of Aspen. Our crews are also capable of installing chain link, post and rail and barbed wire fence.
 Timber Management
NYC crews are available for a number of different timber management projects from silvaculture netting and pruning to slash piling and prescribed fire preparation. We've worked on Forest Service and BLM lands, but also for private companies such as Weyerhauser. Working on timber units in some of the most productive forests in the nation gives youth hands on experience in natural resource management and teaches them about the forest regeneration cycle.
 Cultural Resource Management
Restoring cultural resources and maintaining campgrounds builds on a legacy of public service that started with the Civilian Concervation Corps. Using rustic construction techniques whenever possible, our crews have restored backcountry shelters, historical sites, points of interest, built tent pads, picinic shelters and enhanced accessability for wheel chair users. We've also developed educational trails and installed interpretive signage.
