PARK SERVICE
AmeriCorps Volunteer Project Coordinator

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Willamalane Park and Recreation District offers an exciting opportunity for a service coordinator to engage volunteers in building sustainable volunteer opportunities in Willamalane Park and Recreation District parks. Willamalane Park and Recreation service coordinator will identify and develop unique volunteer opportunities within the District for all ages of community members. A special emphasis will be placed on recruiting and engaging families in service projects enhancing the care neighborhood and community parks. Service coordinators will be expected to participate in weekly service projects and actively recruit volunteers utilizing various methods. Service coordinators will learn GIS technology as it applies to parks maintenance
 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Strong communication skills. Willingness to lead service projects in inclement weather. 
 
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of gardening and /or native vegetation in the Pacific Northwest.
 
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Experience in leading and instructing youth and community in service projects; planning events. Experience with GPS or GIS.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions
Coordinate and recruit volunteer projects for community members; coordinate with WPRD Volunteer Coordinator with volunteer activities. Lead community members in successful volunteer projects. Document data on recruitment and participation of the community and volunteers, and forward the information to WPRD District Volunteer Coordinator. Coordinate with Willamalane Park and Recreation District staff to support volunteer activities in parks.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Secondary Functions
Transport and maintain tools needed for volunteer programs. Participate in required Willamalane Park and Recreation District or AmeriCorps trainings and complete all necessary time sheets and reports.
 
EXAMPLES OF OPPORUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT INTO SERVICE PROJECTS:
  • Create a Weekly “Neighborhood Pot Luck in the Park” rotating between neighborhood parks for two to three months.
  • Create “Good Dog behavior rewards” volunteers.
  • Create a “Do not Feed the Wildlife” education program.
  • Utilize GPS technology to coordinate and facilitate senior walkers into park ambassadors, reporting on conditions, observations, and needs in our parks with smart phones or GPS collectors.
  • Organize patrons at playground and lunch programs to provide educational opportunities to learn about our parks and the related benefits.
  • Enhance and expand our pesticide free park program to represent parks throughout the District with volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteer activities with WPRD District Volunteer Coordinator, create volunteer youth Park scouts that visit neighborhood parks on a daily basis to pick up litter and monitor activity.
  • Explore and propose other volunteer opportunities that build community within our parks.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years old. Possess a valid Oregon driver’s license; safe driving record; pass a criminal history check. Because this job is considered safety sensitive, a drug screen test will be required prior to employment. Fingerprint may need to be supplied.
 
SCHEDULE:  Full time with required weekend work and occasional evening work. The member will serve a minimum of 675 hours. The AmeriCorps service term for the position is July 1, 2011- October 31, 2011. 
 
PROGRAM BENEFITS: The AmeriCorps Volunteer Project Coordinator will earn a living allowance totaling $4,720, dispersed monthly during the term and a $2,038 AmeriCorps education award upon completion of the service term. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing housing, food, work clothes.
